The Patrollers got out for their first tiny adventure yesterday- a very brief visit outside!
Since most of our puppies are born during the winter months, we have developped a bit of a process for gradual exposure. We have to start young so that we can be really gradual with how much time they spend outside at first and for these particular puppies, we wanted to take advantage of a particularly nice day for their first trip. I put a mat down so puppies are never directly on the snow. They are out for about 1-2 minutes tops- enough time to get carried out to the mat, take a few pictures, get a quick visit from a grandma, then they are scooped up and carried back in. Each day from now on there, as long as the weather isn’t extreme, they’ll repeat this process, going outside briefly a few times each day for a little bit longer. As they get older and braver about this time away from their indoor home, they’ll start to explore off the mat a bit at a time- helping to get their little paws acclimated to snow too.
In a couple of weeks, it’s likely these puppies will be ready to go for short walks around the yard and will be pottying exclusively outside. There’s no time to waste in the acclimation process!
